I have a pair of Yamaha NS-AW150 speakers that are 6 ohm. Can I run this volume control. Also is this a powered volume control or do you just hook up speakers and go. Thanks in advance

Hi Bryan:
You can run this pair of speakers with the Volume Control, the default setting on the Volume control is 1/2x. Your six ohm speakers would be calculated as 1.5x so that would work fine. These Volume Controls are passive devices that actually turn the sound down they do not add gain. There is no external power supply needed. You set your Volume levels with the Volume Control fully open all the way clockwise. Adjust the volume from your source to the optimum level just below clipping. Then you are turning the sound down at the volume control. You might want to consider the OVC300 since these speakers are rated at 120 watts.

I currently have a high-end marine stereo on a boat with two pairs of speakers attached, one pair in the cabin and one pair in the aft cockpit area. I want to add a set of speakers to the bow of the boat and was thinking that I would parallel off of the pair of cabin speakers. When completed I'm concerned that if I turn up the volume to hear the bow speakers that the cabin volume will be too high. Can I use a fader control such as this to "balance" the two paralleled pairs of speakers so that the bow pair is louder than the cabin pair?

The single Volume Control will not work for you application. A better choice for you is the SSVC2 dual zone speaker selector which features two Impedance Matching Volume Controls and dual source. These volume control both the OVC-100 and also the ones found in the SSVC2 are passive devices that do not add gain, they actually attenuate the signal, turning it down. So when you turn the sound up for the Bow and cabin speakers you would turn the sound down in the cabin with volume control assigned to that zone (either zone 1 or zone 2). You also have an on/off switch per zone on the speaker selector for added flexibility. (the internal volume controls are also rated at 300 watts peak)

The owner's manual notes that this can "Control: Up to 2 speakers." But the description on the site says 1-8 speakers. Which is it?
Also, if this can handle more than one-pair of speakers, are the conduits large enough to accept multiple sources of speaker wire twisted together?

Good questions, we do not recommend connecting more than two pair of speakers to a single volume control at a time. We do recommend if you are using a eight zone Speaker Selector you will need to use eight Volume Controls, one for each zone. This can include using two pair of speakers on one or two of the zones as well. Note: the Impedance setting number is calculated on number of 8 ohm speakers. If you have 4 ohm speakers you must count this as 2 eight ohm speakers and 6 ohm speakers count as 1.5; 8 ohm speakers. Also per your second question; most input/output connectors accept 14 gauge wire but is tight. You can twist a pair of 16 gauge but is tight as well. That is the same as our Speaker Selector removable input/outputs connectors.

I noticed none of your outdoor VCs have on/off capability. Is there any concern if I leave all of my zones at the lowest setting for extended periods of time without powering off the amp? Could this cause harm to the amp?

How many Volume Controls are you running? Are you using a Speaker Selector as well with the volume controls? I can better answer you if I know a little more about your overall system, like how many speakers and components you are using including Brand and model number?

I have a single set of speakers running through this volume control. I am getting a receiver error indicating a short in the left speaker wiring. I've checked the speaker and wiring connections and found no issues that would cause a short. All connections are banana plugs except for those at the volume control, where the connections are wire nuts. Those connections also look clean. Is it possible that there is a short in the PCBA of this unit? One other symptom: the short seems to occur at higher volumes (above 40% output on the receiver). Again: the receiver and speakers all checked out fine. It's the wiring for the left speaker that is causing the short. Thanks

You say the receiver has an error message that a short is present on the left channel but does the message come on all the time or only after you turn the volume above 40 DB? Are you actually turning the sound down when this occurs (turning the knob counterclockwise until the sound is inaudible). If you are trying to turn the sound down at high output levels you may have an issue where you are saturating the transformers of the OVC 100 which is rated at 50 watts continuous 100 watts peak. This maybe giving you the error message. You probably need to upgrade to the OVC300. Where and when did you buy the current OVC100?
