OSD SVC205 In-Wall Impedance Matching Volume Control with On/Off Switch
The OSD Audio SVC205 is a self-impedance matching in-wall volume controller with an on/off switch. Volume controls do not add gain (volume) to your speakers; they simply attenuate the volume up or down. During setup, you'll set the source volume to its optimum level, then the volume control turns the sound down to almost inaudible levels. The SVC205 is unique in that it let's you turn sound off completely.

What Is Impedance Protection?
Speakers are specified by impedance, which is a measurement of resistance to alternating current, and a common value for speakers is 8 ohms. When you're connecting multiple speakers to a receiver or amplifier, you need to stay above the amp's minimum load requirements because going below the impedance rating can overheat or even damage expensive equipment. The SVC allows you to match the impedance with the number of speakers being controlled with the capabilities of your amp. A basic multi-room system will typically have an amplifier/receiver, a speaker selector, four to eight pairs of speakers, and volume controls. Impedance-matching volume controls feature three settings depending on how many speakers you are connecting. For one to two pairs of 8-ohm speakers, the setting is 1/2x; for three or four pairs of 8 ohm speakers, the setting is 4X. Keep in mind that volume controls do not add gain (volume) to your speakers but simply attenuate the volume up or down. During setup, you'll set the source volume to its optimum level, then the volume control turns the sound down to inaudible levels.

I have a pair of 8 ohm speakers in my game room that will be run to a VC, and another pair of 8 ohm speakers outside which will also be run to a VC. My question is, can I hook up both volume controllers together to the B output of my receiver? If I can, what would I set the impedance to on each VC. I don't know a lot about all this stuff and want to make sure I hook things up correctly. Thanks

Hi Mark,
Unless you can verify that the receiver can handle the load, we don't recommend adding both volume controls. Typically 100W per channel receivers have as many outputs as speakers you can drive. Adding both VCs might put too much of a strain on it. Consider investing in a good amp like our AMP120 or the RX-4105 receiver to drive your additional set of speakers.

I am in the process of adding speakers in my living room. I have a set of Bose Freespace 6 Model 1010 ( 4 speakers and an amp). Unfortunately, the in wall volume control didn't come with it and I know that this model was already discontinued. I checked around and no ones carries this volume control anymore and their newer model volume control won't work with my unit. I am wondering if this volume control SVC205 or 405 model are universal and will be able to do the job? I have 4 speakers pre-wired in the living room. I was thinking of connecting them in parallel so I can control these 4 speakers with one in wall volume control. These bose speakers has 4ohms impedance and if these are connected in parallel, the impedance rating drops. Will this still work?
I appreciate if you can confirm if this volume control can be used with my application?

Hi Joy,
Our SVC205 volume control should work. The setting internally for the impedance matching would be 4x. Connect your speakers in parallel and you should be good to go!

Is this decora style? Meaning will a jumbo single gang decora plate fit?

It is decora style, but I can't guarantee that any bran plate will fit. There are some brands out there with plates that may not fit. We have a 30-day trial period in case it doesn't fit. Call for details. Thanks!

I will plead ignorance for any mistaken wiring. I have three sets of two speakers in separate rooms that I wish to hook to a zone2 of an Onkyo receiver. I purchased three of these switches and an OSD SPW-8 speaker selector. I wired the zone2 to the red input of the SPW-8 and the pre-wiring in the house to the three separate areas. I wired the volume control, set the impedance to 6, and turned it on?? I have sound, but the knob on the switch seems to change the balance between the speakers not the volume. Also, the on/off switch has no effect as I have sound in each position of the switch. Any advice is appreciated!! Mike

HI Mike:
It should be pretty straight forward. I am assuming you connected the ONKYO Room 2 output (maybe channel 6 and 7) directly to the red input connector on the SPW-8. Then you connected zone 1, 2 and 3 to a SVC205 Impedance matching Volume Control making sure to set the impedance Setting located under the Rotary Knob to (you say 6x) to hopefully 4X (pairs not each). Then you made sure to connect to the the right and left output from the zone output on the SPW-8 (right and left +/-) to the input connector found on the bottom of the back of the SVC205 speaker selector. Then connect the left and right speakers from the output connector located at the top of the back of the speaker selector. Does that sound like your actual setup. Then the on off switch should turn the selector on or off.
Note the impedance matching settings are set to pairs not each speaker. If you have 1 or 2 pairs the setting would be 2x. If you have 3 or 4 pairs (3 pairs I am assuming in your system) you set it to 4x and 5, 6, 7 or 8 pairs it should be set to 8x. That is assuming you were using 8 ohm speakers. If you were using 4 ohm speakers you have to count that pair as double or two pair of 8 ohm.
