This 3-way 10 inch in-ceiling speaker is perfect for serious music listening. The 3-way design gives you clean highs, exceptionally good mids and a 10" woofer which gives you full rich bass. If you want bass and bigger sound, this 3-way speaker is designed for for serious home theaters systems and dedicated listening spaces. With power handling up to 150W, this bass rich speaker provides plenty of juice while a 10" Paper Woofer, 2.5" pivoting Paper Cone mid-range, and pivoting 1" Ferrofluid cooled Silk dome tweeter surround you with high end quality sound.
How Does this Speaker Mount in the Ceiling?
Customers often ask us if they need special installation mounting brackets on their OSD ceiling speakers. The answer is no and here’s why. All our in-ceiling speakers feature a dog leg (L-shaped) mounting system that is part of the frame. Before you install the speakers, remove the grille and you’ll see several the mounting screws near the front frame. These screws need to be loosened to activate the dog leg clamps. Use a screwdriver to loosen (turn to the left) these screws and the clamp will come loose. When the speaker is in position in the ceiling, tighten (turn to the right) the screw and the speaker will be secured to the ceiling.
What Type of Speaker Wire and What Gauge?
Wiring is not included with in-ceiling speakers so you will have to purchase some. We recommend our OSD Audio CL3/FT4 cable that is UL (fire) rated for in-wall and outdoor speaker installs. This type of cable includes a heavy-duty outer jacket approved for in-wall/in-ceiling installation. The high-quality plastic jacket is also very flexible so it's easy to run the wires inside the wall. As for the gauge, for runs up to 100 feet for background music, 16-gauge will be fine. If the run is approaching or exceeding 100 feet, we suggest 14-gauge wire.
What Is Butyl Rubber Surround?
With almost double the shelf life of foam, butyl rubber has been the choice of speaker designers looking to optimize the sound based upon materials that go together. The Surround is just one of the integral parts of the speaker's motor structure. Butyl Rubber gives the speaker more excursion capability featuring a deeper bass with a wider frequency response, and its shelf life is closer to 25 years compared to the foam at 12 to 15 years.
Testing the Sound Quality of In-Ceiling Speakers
Many customers like to test the sound quality of their new OSD Audio in-ceiling speakers before they install them. Keep in mind, however, that these flush-mount speakers are designed to be used in the wall or ceiling. Uninstalled in-wall/in-ceiling speakers will sound weak and tinny because without the proper enclosure (in this case your house wall) the speaker can’t produce the sound pressure level it needs. If you want to try them out, we recommend mounting the in-ceiling speakers into a box of about 3 cubic ft. or larger; or simply mount them in the ceiling and then listen. This will give you an accurate measure of the sound quality.
For a retrofit installation, no construction bracket is needed.

You said these are heavy, what is the weight of each speaker? Should I be concerned with the paper cone in an attic environment, a 1/2" plywood back box will be built and installed. Would you recommend any filler in particular for the back box?

Adding fiber fill to the box will make the speaker think it is working in a bigger box. You can experiment with the amount. You can buy the material at any fabric store. It is the same stuff they use to stuff pillows.Poly fiber fill also available at Jo-Anna Fabrics. Just google " Where to buy fiber fill for speaker boxes", and lots of choices will pop up. You even find a technical reason for adding the fiber fill to the box.

The install manual indicates a cut-out dimension of 9 5/16" for the ICE1080HD. Looking at the back of the speaker I don't see how it can fit in that size of a hole. Can you confirm this for me please?

The owner's manual is obviously incorrect, the cutout listed in the specs is the number to go by: Cutout: 12.24"

looking to install in an insulated attick, you have suggested the MK850 in another question but can't find them on the site, i wish to use for 2 channel only and want as much bass as possible using a marantz 80w/ch for two different zones so 4 speakers in all, also are there any back boxes available for the 10''

Hi Robert:
I am assuming you have access to your attic and also the back of the speaker once it has been installed. WE do not have a back box for the 10" but if you have access, it would be easy for you to build a box for the speaker. It would involve a two foot by the width of the joists x 1/2". You would need to cutout the hole to match the Ceiling/Sheet rock (12 1/4" cutout). Then (2) 2 x 6" or whatever will match your Ceiling joists (2 x 6, 2 x 8?) Then take a 3/4 inch board and cut it so it covers the two ceiling joists and also the two cross pieces. Before you do apply silicone to the lower seams at the bottom of the box that is sitting on top of the ceiling. Then apply the silicone to the bottom of the top board at the top of the joist and two side pieces. You might want to drop some fiber fill in the box. Before you seal the top of the box try different amounts of the fiber fill to see which you like the best. Questions; tim@osdaudio.com

Can you use these outside on a covered outdoor patio

Hi Dennis:
I believe this will work for the outside but you will want to do a little weatherproofing while installing it in the ceiling of your outdoor structure. Adding a bead of silicone to the bottom of the frame so you create a seal between the ceiling the speaker frame. It is not as if you are exposing it directly like a rock or patio speaker might be.
