This 3-way 10 inch in-ceiling speaker is perfect for serious music listening. The 3-way design gives you clean highs, exceptionally good mids and a 10" woofer which gives you full rich bass. If you want bass and bigger sound, this 3-way speaker is designed for for serious home theaters systems and dedicated listening spaces. With power handling up to 150W, this bass rich speaker provides plenty of juice while a 10" Paper Woofer, 2.5" pivoting Paper Cone mid-range, and pivoting 1" Ferrofluid cooled Silk dome tweeter surround you with high end quality sound.
How Does this Speaker Mount in the Ceiling?
Customers often ask us if they need special installation mounting brackets on their OSD ceiling speakers. The answer is no and here’s why. All our in-ceiling speakers feature a dog leg (L-shaped) mounting system that is part of the frame. Before you install the speakers, remove the grille and you’ll see several the mounting screws near the front frame. These screws need to be loosened to activate the dog leg clamps. Use a screwdriver to loosen (turn to the left) these screws and the clamp will come loose. When the speaker is in position in the ceiling, tighten (turn to the right) the screw and the speaker will be secured to the ceiling.
What Type of Speaker Wire and What Gauge?
Wiring is not included with in-ceiling speakers so you will have to purchase some. We recommend our OSD Audio CL3/FT4 cable that is UL (fire) rated for in-wall and outdoor speaker installs. This type of cable includes a heavy-duty outer jacket approved for in-wall/in-ceiling installation. The high-quality plastic jacket is also very flexible so it's easy to run the wires inside the wall. As for the gauge, for runs up to 100 feet for background music, 16-gauge will be fine. If the run is approaching or exceeding 100 feet, we suggest 14-gauge wire.
What Is Butyl Rubber Surround?
With almost double the shelf life of foam, butyl rubber has been the choice of speaker designers looking to optimize the sound based upon materials that go together. The Surround is just one of the integral parts of the speaker's motor structure. Butyl Rubber gives the speaker more excursion capability featuring a deeper bass with a wider frequency response, and its shelf life is closer to 25 years compared to the foam at 12 to 15 years.
Testing the Sound Quality of In-Ceiling Speakers
Many customers like to test the sound quality of their new OSD Audio in-ceiling speakers before they install them. Keep in mind, however, that these flush-mount speakers are designed to be used in the wall or ceiling. Uninstalled in-wall/in-ceiling speakers will sound weak and tinny because without the proper enclosure (in this case your house wall) the speaker can’t produce the sound pressure level it needs. If you want to try them out, we recommend mounting the in-ceiling speakers into a box of about 3 cubic ft. or larger; or simply mount them in the ceiling and then listen. This will give you an accurate measure of the sound quality.
For a retrofit installation, no construction bracket is needed.

I am planning on buying four of these for my 5.1 surround sound. What would you recommend using for the center speaker?

Hi John,
You can use the same speaker as the center. Generally you want the front L/R to match the center at least as far as the tweeter goes. In this case, you should do an ICE1080HD for the center as well.

do you have plastic speaker boxes to mount these in when mounting in the ceiling? I see only boxes for 6" and 8" speakers. Are there any rimless covers for this size speaker. Thanks, john

Hi John,
Unfortunately no back boxes for this model and no trimless version available. You can mount the speaker directly into the ceiling, no box required.

Am hooking one of these 1080 HD's up simply on a table to a Yamaha HTR 5960. Am using THX certified cable too. Sounds awful like an old Pocket radio. Have to turn the amplifier up all the way to hear at reasonable level. This amplifier was like thunder in my home theater system. Anyone have any tips about ceiling speakers ? My home theater setup are all high end infinitiys ...

Hi Pat,
My guess is that the speakers aren't sounding great due to the fact that they're not installed in the ceiling yet, and you're not running enough watts into them. Since they're large 10" woofers, you're gonna need some decent watts to reach ideal sound level/quality. Try installing the speakers into the ceiling or putting a box behind them and make sure you're pumping out good power from your amp. Large speakers like this are built to sound great at higher volumes. It doesn't have to be super loud, but you want sufficient power running to them.

Wanted to install these in a room that has 14ft ceilings with primarily speaking or lecturing going on. Will this speaker work for that?

What are you using as a source. And will it be 8 ohm or 70V. This speaker is sold as each (a single speaker). It would need to add an external transformer if you wanted to use with 70V. I would need more info to assist you better.
